传说，克里特岛的国王米诺斯（Minos）是宙斯和欧罗巴公主的儿子。在他与兄弟争夺王位时，曾请求海神波塞冬降下神迹来支持他。波塞冬答应了他，从海中升出一头俊美的白色公牛，并要求事后把公牛献祭给他。没想到米诺斯当时国王后，不舍得宰杀这头俊美的白牛，就偷梁换柱用另一头牛代替献祭给了波塞冬。波塞冬特别生气，想严惩这个欺骗神灵的国王，就施展法力，使王后爱上了这头白牛。王后生下了一个牛头人身的怪物米诺陶洛斯。为了遮羞，米诺斯要求当时著名的工匠代达罗斯（Daedalus）建造了一座名叫labyrinth的迷宫，把弥诺陶洛斯关在里面。
