在中世纪欧洲，死刑的执行方式一般是绞刑或斩首。处决普通犯人时采用绞刑，处决贵族时使用宝剑斩首。与中国人喜欢留个全尸不同，西方人认为被砍掉脑袋更加高贵，也没有被绞死那么痛苦，只有勇敢的贵族才配得上这种待遇。不过，如果宝剑不够锋利，行刑过程也会变得极其痛苦。为了降低死刑的痛苦，法国一名信仰人文主义的医生，约瑟夫·吉约坦（Joseph Guillotin）提出，认为死刑应以快速及人道的方式执行，而且应对所有人采用同一刑罚以提倡平等。因此，他提议统一采用斩首的方式执行死刑。
