词源词缀法
来自阿拉伯语。历史上有过许许多多种类的布。很早以前，古埃及人把他们织的一种布叫作al-quton；西班牙人吸收了这个词，把它写作algodont和coton；法国人吸收了coton，意指“棉布”。1400年，这个词进入了中古英语，后来又加进了字母“t”，成了今天的cotton这个词在现代英语中主要作“棉花”讲，但也仍可作“棉布”解。
